If I Witness a Car Accident, What Should I Do?

It’s no secret that our Lowcountry region continues to attract many visitors, new residents, and new businesses, all of which contribute to more traffic and auto accidents. It can be upsetting to see an accident happen right in front of you. Stopping safely and following these suggestions can provide a great service to the people involved in the accident.

Here’s what to do if you witness a car accident in front of you:

  • Pull over to a safe area, leaving room for emergency vehicles.
  • Turn on your hazard lights and only exit your vehicle if it’s safe to do so.
  • Call 911. The responder can evaluate if emergency assistance is needed. Be prepared to share your location and what you witnessed. Be sure you’re parked before you use your cell phone!
  • If it seems safe, offer help. Ask people if they’re hurt but do not move them. Offer to let them use your phone if they need to call someone. Stay on the scene, offer a statement to police, and provide your contact details.
